Commonly found on sarcophagi of Pharaohs, the Ankh would ensure life after death. Anubis, the God of the Afterlife, would be seen holding an Ankh to the lips of the deceased; the ‘key’ to open the door to the next life.
The Ankh was often depicted in the hands of important Egyptian figures, such as Gods, Goddesses and Pharaohs; a symbol preserving their immortality. Other speculations bring the idea that the Ankh is a symbol of the union of feminine and masculine; of the union of Isis and Osiris, two important Gods in Ancient Egyptian mythology. Many believe that the shape of the Ankh is the interlocking of the male and female organs, which would imply the sexual union that leads to the creation of life. This makes the Ankh a powerful symbol of fertility.
